The opening number follows the feet of several people as they make their way through the city. The sharp loafers of the businessmen and classy high heels of the dainty dames hoof it to the bouncy rhythm as their proprietors sing about the glorious afternoon.
Joe watches the merriment from his home in the sewer below while his love, Rose Marie, views it from the bedroom of her lonely mansion. Both sing of their isolation from society and longing for love. The song ends back on the city streets with a chorus of voices and feet all finding that theirs is a world to be enjoyed as long as they keep it in step!
